Privacy Policy
This policy explains what data ilovemardown.com collects, why, and how long we keep it. The short version is that we collect very little. There is no account to create, we never sell your data, and every file you convert deletes itself within 24 hours. Last reviewed: 2026-07-14.
The Purpose of This Policy
We want you to understand exactly what happens to your data when you use our Markdown tools. This policy describes ilovemardown.com as it is actually built and operated, in plain language, so that what you read here matches what the service does. It sits alongside our Security and Data Protection page, which covers the technical side in more detail.
Who Runs the Service
iLoveMarkdown operates ilovemardown.com and its free Markdown tools, including the MD to PDF converter, the live preview, and the validator. For the small amount of data described below, we are the data controller. When you convert a document, the file you upload may contain your own personal data. We only process that file to produce your PDF, we never inspect it, and we delete it on the schedule set out under retention.
What Data We Process
Because there are no accounts, we hold no profile, password, or contact record for you. The complete list of what we process is short enough to state in full.
- Standard server logs. IP address, requested page, and timestamp. We use these to operate the service, debug problems, and investigate abuse.
- Product analytics. Aggregate usage events that tell us which tools get used and where errors happen, so we know what to improve. This is about the product, never about the content of your documents.
- Conversion records, for 24 hours. When you convert a file we store the generated PDF, the original filename, the file size, and the conversion time. All of it is deleted together with the file.
Why We Process It and Our Legal Basis
We process the data above for a few narrow purposes, each with a lawful basis under the GDPR.
- Providing the service. Converting your Markdown to PDF and serving the result. This is our legitimate interest in running the tool you asked to use, and it is necessary to deliver what you requested.
- Keeping the service secure and reliable. Using logs to prevent abuse, diagnose faults, and protect the service. This is our legitimate interest in a safe, working product.
- Improving the product. Using aggregate analytics to see what works and what breaks. This is our legitimate interest in making the tools better.
We do not run advertising, and we do not build advertising profiles about you.
Your Files and AI Training
We never use your content to train, improve, or develop AI models, our own or anyone else's. Your uploaded Markdown and the PDF we generate are used for one thing only, which is producing and delivering your download. No human reads your documents, and they are never fed into a machine learning pipeline.
Cookies and Analytics
We use a single product analytics provider, PostHog, to understand how the tools are used in aggregate. It may set cookies or use similar browser storage to count visits and measure feature usage. We do not use advertising cookies, and we do not embed third-party ad or social trackers.
You can block cookies in your browser settings without losing access to any tool on the site. The preview and validator run entirely in your browser and work regardless of your cookie choices.
Third Parties and International Transfers
We keep third parties to a minimum and never sell or rent your data to data brokers or advertisers. The parties involved in running the service are:
- Our hosting provider, which runs the servers that serve these pages and perform conversions on our behalf.
- PostHog, our analytics provider, which processes aggregate usage events. PostHog is hosted in the United States, so using the site involves a transfer of analytics data outside the European Economic Area, carried out under appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses.
We may also disclose data if we are legally required to, for example to comply with a valid legal request or to protect the security of the service.
How Long We Keep Your Data
We keep data only as long as it is needed for the purpose it was collected for.
- Converted files and their records are permanently deleted within 24 hours. Download links expire at exactly 24 hours, and a scheduled cleanup job removes the file and its metadata together. There is no setting or paid tier that keeps files longer.
- Server logs and aggregate analytics are retained only for as long as they are useful for security and product improvement, and then discarded or kept in aggregate form that no longer identifies you.
Your Rights
Under the GDPR and similar laws you have the right to access, correct, erase, restrict, or object to the processing of your personal data, and the right to data portability. We follow the principle of data minimisation, so the best protection is that we hold almost nothing about you. Because there are no accounts, there is usually no profile to access or export, and your converted file erases itself within 24 hours.
If you want to exercise any of these rights, or ask a question about your data, contact us at [email protected]. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
Children's Privacy
Our tools are general-purpose utilities and are not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. Since using the tools requires no account and no personal details, there is nothing for a child to register or submit. If you believe a child has sent us personal data, contact us and we will remove it.
Changes to This Policy and Contact
If we change how we handle data, we will update this page and revise the review date at the top. For any privacy question, or to exercise your rights, reach us at [email protected].
